Minimum Wage in a Multi-Tier Search and Wage-Posting Model with Cross-Market Substitutions

چکیده

While minimum wage policy is widely adopted in the real world, can it effectively raise average of lower paid jobs without having large detrimental consequences for employment? The empirical literature fails to establish robust findings. We develop a general-equilibrium search and wage-posting framework with heterogeneous workers tasks matching multi-tier labor markets: abstract, routine high-skilled, middle-skilled, manual middle-skilled low-skilled. incorporate rich cross-market spillovers compositional effects from individual responses market thickness. As result hikes, we show that (i) unemployment rate at binding higher, while all other markets enjoy rate; (ii) employment low-skilled lower, whereas high-skilled higher due substitutions; and, (iii) has ambiguous conflicting on potential worker entry unemployment. By calibrating model fit U.S. data, evaluate impacts federal hike (2007-2009) on-going increase Seattle (2017-2021). find depend crucially magnitudes spillover may be weak nonbinding market. Moreover, our results suggest that, both hikes reduce aggregate output, they only generate small submarket overall wages. Job and Wage Mobility in a Search Model with Non-Compliance (Exemptions) with the Minimum Wage

Job and Wage Mobility in a Search Model with Non-Compliance (Exemptions) with the Minimum Wage How well does a simple search on-the-job model fit the eighteen years of job and wage mobility of high school graduates? To answer this question we are confronted from the data with a prevalent non-compliance and exemptions from the minimum wage. We incorporate this observation in a job search model w...

Equilibrium Wage and Employment Dynamics in a Model of Wage Posting without Commitment

Equilibrium Wage and Employment Dynamics in a Model of Wage Posting without Commitment A rich but tractable variant of the Burdett-Mortensen model of wage setting behavior is formulated and a dynamic market equilibrium solution to the model is defined and characterized. In the model, firms cannot commit to wage contracts. Instead, the Markov perfect equilibrium to the wage setting game, charact...

Stagnation and minimum wage: Optimal minimum wage policy in macroeconomics

This paper argues how an increase in minimum wage affects employment, consumption, and social welfare with dynamic general equilibrium model without market frictions. The study demonstrates that a minimum wage hike reduces an actual unemployment rate and has positive effects on an employment rate under the demand-shortage economy whereas they do not under a non-demand shortage economy. The stud...

Wage Inequality, Minimum Wage Effects and Spillovers

This paper investigates possible spillover effects of the UK minimum wage. The halt in the growth in inequality in the lower half of the wage distribution (as measured by the 50:10 percentile ratio) since the mid 1990s, in contrast to the continued inequality growth in the upper half of the distribution, suggests the possibility of a minimum wage effect and spillover effects on wages above the ...

Wage discrimination and partial compliance with the minimum wage law

This paper presents a simple model to characterize the discriminatory behavior of a non-complying firm in a minimum-wage economy. In the analysis, the violating firm pays one “favored” group of workers the statutory minimum and the other “non-favored” group of workers a sub-minimum. We find conditions under which law enforcement is ineffective in improving the between-group wage differentials. ...
